Frame off 20/20 Hindsight

Post by ppeters914 »

Finally getting ready to pull the body off the frame to send to body/paint guy. The TechWiki shows all the steps plus it ain't rocket science once you start the process. However, before I actually lift it off (which will be fun in a one bay garage ), I'm wondering if any of you who've done this had any "I wish I'd done 'X' before pulling the body or before putting it back on." For example:

BEFORE REMOVING BODY
1. I plan on relocating the side view mirrors, so I'm going to drill the new holes and tell the body guy to weld up the old ones.
2. I also have two sets of holes for bolting in the seats. Need to figure out which set to use, then have the others welded up.

BEFORE ATTACHING BODY
1. Powdercoat frame and other bits.

Other thoughts?

Thanks.
Pete

Take pictures of everything before and during disassembly. I wish I had, but with a second car in the garage I go to it to figure things out.
66 stroker, almost done.
67 basket case, paint coming soon.

Take twice as many as you think you need, then go back and take some more. Shoot different angles because sometimes straight on shots won't show the detail you need. Mike

If you are going to roll the lips on your fenders, you could do that prior to sending it off. You can also treat your frame and bottom rockers to internal coatings while the two are separated.

I don't know what year your car is but on my 67 I had the body shop make the "splash guard" for the starter removable. Now I can get the starter in and out through the wheel very easily. This harder on 69 and 70 cars as they don't have as much room.

Modified my signature to show vehicles.

Pictures: Yup, a bunch plus I have a '66 parts car. Plenty of roadsters near me plus y'all if I get stuck.

Roll fenders: Not thinking that's necessary w/ stock wheels and 195x60 tires.

Internal Coatings: Like POR15 or the Eastwood stuff?

Door braces: I have some, but the body/paint guy asked I leave the doors & fenders on, said he would take apart.

Remove splash guard: Hmmmm.......

Watch the front apron closely. It seems to always get hung up on anything and everything.
